This Week's Segments
This week on The Weekly show, BD+C editors speak with AEC industry leaders about:
- The award-winning Central Station Memphis hotel reconstruction project
- How Autodesk plans to bring generative design and AI to the AEC masses
BD+C's David Barista sits down with Vikram Dutt, Associate Vice President, Building Design Strategy and Marketing, with Autodesk, to discuss the tech giant's recent acquisition of AI and generative design platform provider Spacemaker.
Dutt talks about common applications for generative design in today's market, and hints at future applications for this technology.
Central Station Memphis is a new hotel formed from the bones of the historic train station in the Home of the Blues. BD+C's Rob Cassidy chats with the developer, McLean Wilson; the design firms, LRK and Bounds & Gillespie Architects; and the general contractor, Robins & Morton, about the reconstruction, which won Bronze honors in Building Design+Construction's 37th Annual "Reconstruction Awards" in 2020.
BD+C's Robert Cassidy interviews Steve Briganti, President, and CEO of the Statue of Liberty–Ellis Island Foundation; Nick Garrison, Partner, FXCollaborative; and Doug Phelps, President, Phelps Construction, on the design and construction of the Statue of Liberty Museum, which won a Gold Award in Building Design+Construction's 2020 "Building Team Awards."
BD+C's David Barista talks with Kami Kinkaid, LEED AP, Associate Principal and K-12 Education Leader with Perkins and Will, about how schools are handling "back to school" this fall, including design measures that support emotional learning and small cohort curriculum.
BD+C's John Caulfield speaks with Sabrina Bornstein of Buro Happold, which is leading a climate vulnerability assessment team for Los Angeles County.
This week on The Weekly show, BD+C editors spoke with leaders from Balfour Beatty, Farr Associates, and Graycor on three important topics:
- A five-point plan for decarbonizing Chicago
- Re-evaluating delayed capital projects
- The future of the construction jobsite
BD+C's Robert Cassidy interviews Doug Farr, Founder and Principal of Chicago architecture firm Farr Associates.
He and 65 other Chicagoans have formed "Carbon-Free Chicago 2050" and have developed a 5-point plan, "The Common Agenda," to decarbonize the city of Chicago.
BD+C's David Barista speaks with Graycor's Shawn Buchanan about the state of delayed and postposed capital projects amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to AGC, 60% of construction firms have had at least one future project postponed or canceled because of the coronavirus, while 33% report having projects that were already underway halted because of the pandemic.
As the nation inches its way back to "business as usual," Buchanan says owners and developers need to re-evaluate the metrics and benchmarks that were used to establish the viability of these projects pre-COVID-19.
BD+C's John Caulfield interviews Eric Stenman, Balfour Beatty's U.S. Buildings President, about the future of the jobsite. Stenman addresses how contractors are coping with product and manpower shortages, and looks ahead at what COVID-19 protocols are likely to be here to stay.
This week on The Weekly, BD+C editors spoke with leaders from BR Architects, DLR Group, and Thomas Jefferson University about three timely trends:
- Smart building analytics and building optimization tools
- The future of smart cities
- Community storm shelter design
Ruairi Barnwell, Principal and Building Optimization Group Leader with DLR Group, speaks with BD+C's Robert Cassidy about building optimization and smart building analytics, and the shortcomings of the current building design process.
When it comes to building performance, says Barnwell, the focus should be on outcomes, not predictions or following prescriptive tables in the code to "checkboxes."
BD+C's John Caulfield interviews Edgar Stach, a licensed architect and a professor at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, about the future of smart cities, in terms of what's driving this movement and what still needs to happen for new and older cities to interconnect in ways that reduce energy consumption and improve livability and sustainability.
Stach is the founder and past director of the Institute for Smart Structures at the University of Tennessee.
Bradford Russell, AIA, PE, Director of Architecture and Engineering with BR Architects, talks with BD+C's David Barista about community storm shelter design, and updates to the key standard that drives design and construction measures for community storm shelters, ICC 500.
Among the updates: more stringent impact requirements for specific components of storm shelters, including shutters and folding partitions.
This week, BD+C editors spoke with leaders from MBH Architects, McMillan, Pazdan, Smith and CallisonRTKL
- Designing Labs to Address the Coronavirus and Future Health Events
- The Household Model for Assisted Living Facility Design
- Breaking the Rules of Retail
